MT4 vs MT5 vs cTrader: Which Platform Is Right for You?
MetaTrader 4, MetaTrader 5, and cTrader are the three major CFD trading platforms. Learn how they compare. MT4 vs MT5 vs TradingView vs cTrader — features.
MetaTrader 4 (MT4)
The most popular forex platform in history. Launched in 2005, MT4 is used by millions of traders and supported by nearly every broker. Strengths: simplicity, massive community, thousands of indicators/EAs. Weaknesses: outdated interface, no depth of market, limited charting tools.
MetaTrader 5 (MT5)
MT5 is the successor to MT4, but adoption has been slow. It adds: more timeframes, depth of market, economic calendar, better backtesting, and multi-asset support (stocks, futures). Weaknesses: fewer custom indicators/EAs than MT4, some brokers don't offer it, and the interface is barely an improvement.
cTrader
cTrader is the modern alternative. Developed by Spotware, it offers: clean interface, depth of market, level II pricing, faster execution, and built-in copy trading. Strengths: best UI, best charting, transparent pricing. Weaknesses: fewer brokers offer it, smaller community.
Which to Choose
- Beginner: MT4 — simplest to learn, most tutorials available
- Algorithmic trader: MT4 or MT5 — largest EA ecosystem
- Advanced manual trader: cTrader — best interface and tools
- If your broker only offers MT4/MT5, start there — the platform matters less than your strategy
