1H vs 4H vs Daily: Which Timeframe Should You Trade?
Choosing the right chart timeframe is a core decision for any CFD trader. Lower timeframes give you more signals but also more noise. Higher timeframes filter the noise but provide fewer trading opportunities. Here's how each one behaves — and how to choose.
The Core Trade-off
- • 1H — ~16 bars per trading day. More signals, more noise, tighter stops needed. Day traders and scalpers.
- • 4H — ~4-6 bars per day. Filters intraday noise, captures multi-day moves. The sweet spot for most CFD strategies.
- • Daily — 1 bar per day. Most reliable signals, lowest noise, but fewer trades and wider stops.
1-Hour (1H)
The 1-hour chart is favoured by day traders and scalpers. It provides roughly sixteen bars each trading day, allowing you to catch intraday momentum spikes.
- ✓ Many trade setups, quick feedback, works with scalping and breakout strategies.
- ✗ Higher market noise, increased false signals, requires tighter stop-losses.
4-Hour (4H)
The 4-hour chart is the sweet spot for most CFD swing traders. With only four to six bars per day, it smooths out intraday noise while still offering enough granularity for multiple trades per week.
- ✓ Filters intraday volatility, captures multi-day trends, balanced risk-reward.
- ✗ Fewer setups than 1H, may miss very short-term opportunities.
Daily
Daily candles provide the most reliable signals but the fewest trades. Position traders and long-term investors rely on this timeframe for its stability.
- ✓ Lowest noise, most reliable trend signals, allows wider stops.
- ✗ Only a handful of trades per month, requires larger capital for meaningful exposure.
How TradeTestr Tests All Three
The Strategy Lab runs every strategy on 1H, 4H, and Daily. 50 strategy-instrument combos × 3 timeframes = 150 backtests per strategy. You can compare the same strategy across timeframes side-by-side.
Which Timeframe Wins?
It depends on the strategy:
- • Trend-following (EMA, Donchian) tends to perform better on 4H and Daily.
- • Mean-reversion (Bollinger, RSI) can work on 1H in ranging conditions.
- • Scalping strategies only make sense on 1H or lower.
